This book began where many of the Holy Spirit’s promptings begin with me these days, in fellowship with other Christians. A casual evening conversation with some of my best friends (who also happen to be co-pastors) turned into a discussion about how we could encourage Christ followers to be better at sharing their faith. A few Scriptures were quoted, some insights were given, and many ideas were shared. Before long, one word seemed to be impressed upon our hearts simultaneously. I love it when the Spirit does that! The word He gave us that cool October evening was the word "open."
If Christ followers are to become dangerous witnesses, (remember, "martyr" first meant “to give testimony” but came to mean “death” for that testimony—dangerous indeed!) then some things are going to have to open. The Scriptures and this study both encourage us to pray for, to look for, and to walk through openings to share the good news we have in Jesus. We need to be open to sharing our lives with outsiders. We need to openly share our stories of faith. We need to pray for the Spirit to open doors for us speak. And we need to open our mouths when the time is right.
This study tool is all about these series of openings that take place every time someone comes to know Jesus as Lord and Savior. But this book is also more than just a study. In an effort to help each of us find ourselves in the context of the bigger story, we have created a very unique book that addresses evangelism from several different angles. This book is a study. This book is a history. This book is a testimony. This book is a training manual. These all come together to help you prepare to share your faith.
What is the goal? Our prayer is that everyone who completes this study will be equipped and motivated to do one simple thing—become a disciple for Jesus. We believe that this goal is what Jesus called his followers to do in Matthew 28, and we believe it's the most important, eternal goal we can achieve. Prayerfully, in the months and years after this study, thousands will walk through the open door of faith in Christ and learn to live.
